Cuba and Venezuela’s struggles against capitalist-imperialism are part of this long tradition of resistance.[1] As Lenin tells us, “Colonial policy and imperialism existed before the latest stage of capitalism, and even before capitalism.” [2]

Through attempts at starvation and manufacturing internal dissent amongst the Cuban people at their government, the so-called United States has been punishing revolutionary Cuba for more than 60 years. The embargo on Cuba has been the most devastating and illegal blockade of a country that has ever been conducted in these past centuries, yet el pueblo Cubano has prevailed against all odds and demonstrated time and time again that socialism is the true path to national liberation. We note that, although the origin of the name Cuba itself is still disputed, it is thought to have been derived from the Indigenous Taino term “cubanacán” or “kuba;” this area has been an area of violence, oppression, and ongoing resistance since the days of Columbus. Sixty-seven years ago, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and the rest of M-26-7 led the Cuban Revolution which overthrew Fulgencio Batista and his neocolonial government which kept the Cuban people subjugated and the island a playground for American capital. This revolution showed the world that even 90 miles away from the “United States”, such a nation can break free of imperialist shackles. Cuba established a revolutionary state which began a series of bourgeois democratic reforms. After immediate retaliation from the US and Soviet demonstrations of solidarity the revolution soon moved in a socialist direction, transforming Cuba with literacy, healthcare, housing, and central planning. It has even succeeded in resisting foreign intervention by withstanding the failed Bay of Pigs invasion attempt. The so-called “United States”, claiming its hegemony in what they call their backyard, did not accept this outcome and initiated an embargo that has isolated the small island from the outside world. It stipulated that the United States will not allow any trade with Cuba, and any country that attempts to trade with them will be punished economically. Unfortunately, the United States empire maintains its stranglehold over the global financial system; many countries have not dared to trade with Cuba in fear of punishment and retaliation. It’s worth noting that imperialist media, including liberal or progressive sources, will often highlight narratives of the Cuban-American diaspora to help build mass support for the interests of the US Empire. Similarly, appointing token individuals who will serve those same interests furthers imperialist aggression through liberal-progressive ideology.

For many years, Cuba has relied on trade and funding from the USSR, which was historically its most significant economic partner. When reactionaries illegally dissolved the USSR in 1991, Cuba lost a lifeline and as a result, entered “The Special Period”, a time of shortages, hunger, and hardship. During this time, the Cuban socialist system underwent reforms and setbacks. In spite of these odds, the Cuban state has prevailed to this very day. Aid from the Russian Federation and Venezuela came in the 21st century giving Cuba new opportunities for trade and sovereignty, as well as the forgiveness of 90% of Cuba’s Soviet-era loans. Even under its severe blockade and lack of imported medical materials, Cuban healthcare is one of the island’s greatest achievements, among the most advanced in the world. This medical system and its practitioners have been used to treat not only the citizens of Cuba, but countless other peoples, earning them praise and admiration globally. None of this would be possible without Cuba’s early socialist and internationalist commitments. Right now, Cuba is going through another round of food and energy shortages that has been compared to the special period in the 90s. The current Trump administration, including the traitor Marco Rubio, wants to “have the honor of taking Cuba” and to ensure US hegemony stays dominant in Latin America. The People’s Revolutionary Party supports Cuba by all means necessary to ensure that it does not fall under US imperialist hands, and we support their right for liberation and resistance against imperialism.

Viva Fidel Castro, Viva Che Guevara, Viva Cuba Libre!!!

We witnessed imperialism violate Venezuela’s sovereignty on January 3rd, 2026, when the United States empire conducted an illegal operation under international law through the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro in the capital city of Caracas. The People’s Revolutionary Party has condemned this event as a another case of US imperialism intervening in Latin America, which in and of itself is the result of colonial conquest and domination, as we have discussed in previous statements on our website. Historically, Venezuela has been known for having one of the biggest oil reserves in the world, and the broader region has been an area of imperial resource extraction and plunder; the first oil well was drilled in Peru in 1863, and other resources, such as rubber, became central to imperial plunder of capital, which resulted in oppression and genocide throughout the region. The area that came to be known as Venezuela was found to have massive oil reserves, and for many decades, the country has been a pawn of the United States until the late Bolivarian revolutionary, Hugo Chavez, reigned into power and immediately transformed the country by nationalizing its oil reserves and using its profits to fund social programs that immensely benefited the Venezuelan working class. In addition, it had taken a strong stance against US imperialism across Abya Yala and globally, supporting movements and countries that resist western imperialism such as Cuba and Palestine. Since then, the “United States” has seen Venezuela as a country that threatened its imperial dominance in the region. After the rise of Chavismo, the country has threatened “US” hegemony across the continent. The US has used sanctions as economic warfare to undermine the Bolivarian Revolution, and gained the buy-in of the US population through accusing the Venezuelan government of mistreating their civilians. Again, as we saw in Cuba and as we see with any sovereign state that does not serve the interests of empire, media outlets parrot the narratives that serve imperial interests. Public critiques of the PSUV and the Venezuelan political system are not appropriate at a time when the “United States” is violating Venezuelan sovereignty in an unprecedented way.

As of right now, Delcy Rodriguez is the acting president of Venezuela and it seems that she is willing to reverse Venezuela’s nationalization of its oil reserves by opening up the energy sector to privatization. This will of course lead to more foreign ownership from corporations such as Shell and Chevron and will accelerate and exacerbate internal economic issues. Communists understand this scenario too well. The “United States” intervenes, and governments that don’t capitulate to imperial interests are replaced by puppets to continue exploiting the resources and labor of once sovereign states. Although this has only been ongoing for about four months, the future of Venezuela seems uncertain; only time will tell whether the current system will survive or if the struggle for socialism will enter a new phase.

Mainstream media will support the imperialist narrative that nationalization of oil is an authoritarian act that goes against the interests of its people, and we will see this narrative used to promote imperial interests, whether in the case of Cuba, Venezuela, or Iran. These narratives seek to undermine sovereignty. Similarly, we have seen this narrative used again and again for “progressive” interests such as “human rights” or “democracy” that are convenient talking points that surface when “US” parasitism and imperialism are challenged. The People’s Revolutionary Party strongly condemns “US” imperial aggression in both Cuba and Venezuela.

DEATH TO EMPIRE

DEATH TO CAPITAL

LONG LIVE COMMUNISM

footnotes

Capitalism-Imperialism on Turtle Island and Abya Yala wrote its own history to undermine the sovereignty of nations and peoples it occupies, and these narratives have remained some of the strongest tools of empire in our own time. Therefore, in recognition of this region for its resistance to colonial and imperial conquest from the 15th century onwards, we will use terms like Abya Yala and Turtle Island throughout this statement to describe the potential for a revolutionary alternative. Settler colonialism is part of the PRP program, and we offer this as a footnote because we do not wish to detract from the statement in solidarity with the Global South. In Healing Like Our Ancestors,” Polanco articulates this well by stating: “…I find it imperative to acknowledge the expansive and violent ways in which colonialism linked the globe and oppressed its people. For instance, Black people arrived with the first Europeans in the Caribbean, and the same is true for mainland expeditions in Mesoamerica and the Andes…. Moreover, Spanish colonial ventures forcefully brought people from Southeast Asia to what is today Mexico and other parts of Latin America. In recent years, scholarship has begun to critically explore this history.” (introduction, p. xx) The author then uses the phrase Abya Yala in the work’s glossary, defining it as: “An Indigenous concept that denotes the region that is otherwise called “Latin America,” including the islands of the Caribbean. In the Kuna language, Abya Yala means “land of vital blood.” Usage of Abya Yala eschews colonial terms and questions colonial claims, while expressing support for Indigenous rights.” Polanco, Edward Anthony, Healing Like Our Ancestors: the Nahua Ticitl, Gender, and Settler Colonialism in Central Mexico, 1535-1660, University of Arizona Press, 2024.

Lenin, Vladimir Ilyich. Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism, “Part VI.
