Living Matter is the theoretical journal for Peoples’ Revolutionary Party.
“Contrary to idealism, which asserts that only our consciousness really exists, and that the material world, being, nature, exists only in our consciousness’ in our sensations, ideas and perceptions, the Marxist philosophical materialism holds that matter, nature, being, is an objective reality existing outside and independent of our consciousness; that matter is primary, since it is the source of sensations, ideas, consciousness, and that consciousness is secondary, derivative, since it is a reflection of matter, a reflection of being; that thought is a product of matter which in its development has reached a high degree of perfection, namely, of the brain, and the brain is the organ of thought; and that therefore one cannot separate thought from matter without committing a grave error.” Joseph Stalin, Dialectical and Historical Materialism.
We’re happy to announce that we’ve named our theoretical journal Living Matter to reflect our commitment to dialectical and historical materialism. As Stalin discusses in the above passage, a core idea of Marxist theory is that we are made of matter. As matter, we exist as part of the world around us; matter shapes us and as it shapes our thinking. We will not confine ourselves and our thought to the shapes designed for us, and forced upon us, by bourgeois society. We must release ourselves from the constraints of bourgeois ideology as it appears in its many iterations across Turtle Island (also known as so-called America) if we wish to no longer be caught under the weight of nightmares past. For this reason, we have named our journal Living Matter as we commit to overcoming the nightmares of bourgeoisie past, present, and future. We will use Living Matter as a space to engage with the most advanced understandings of how we and our society interact as matter; here, we will consider thought as the organization of matter into meaning, relationships as the connection of matter into process, class society as socially constructed boundaries on relationships, and capitalism as matter accumulated and assembled from stolen land. Let us unite against revisionism and metaphysics as we advance the struggle to liberate the global majority proletariat from the chains of capitalist imperialism.
On the logo for Living Matter: the outer circle represents the Earth, which we all share and must protect. Inside, the turtle symbolizes Turtle Island, the fundamental material basis upon which all struggle and life unfolds. The eagle, hummingbird, bison, and orca stand as sacred relatives, embodying the distinct yet united Indigenous nations whose frontline struggles for sovereignty are inextricably linked to our own fight for collective liberation. The tree is a universal symbol of life, strength, and organic growth, which represents balance of nature and also the working class. Then the age-old symbol of the atom. This is “Matter.” It grounds the design in a materialist worldview, reflecting our commitment to a scientific analysis of society. It speaks to the building blocks of the universe and the fundamental, physical reality we seek to transform.
